Brennan Manning in Chicago

One of my favorite Christian authors is Brennan Manning - and he'll be speaking in Chicago on May 21st! For those in or near Chicago, you should come along. He's the author of The Ragamuffin Gospel amongst many other books.

When I was poking around his website I noticed his appearance is sponsored by a group called "The Pulse." Having never heard of them, I called the number. Apparently they're a group of Christian musicians and fine artists just getting off the ground, and somehow for their first gathering they've managed to snag Manning.

It's at the Chopin Theatre, 1543 W. Division Ave. in Wicker park. Admission $10. Monday night, May 21st, 7:00 pm.

sounds cool. Can you suggest a book of his that I should check out first? If it's interesting, I might go see him.

I've read three so far - and my favorite has been The Signature of Jesus. In my opinion he's quite different from a lot of other Christin authors. He doesn't have large numbers of points that can be boiled down to a powerpoint presentation of faith, he generally has one theme for a book and just talks about it using a lot of stories. For Signature, the back of the book sums it up pretty well:

"For those who recognize that many of the burning theological issues in the church today are neither burning nor theological; who see Christianity neither as a moral code or a belief system but as a love affair; who have not forgotten that they are followers of a crucified Christ; who know that following him means living dangerously; who want to live the gospel without compromise; who have no greater desire than to have his signature written on the pages of their lives."

Having said that, watch him bring a powerpoint presentation.

The Signature of Jesus is the only Brennan Manning book I own so far, and I haven't gotten to start it, but I've also heard good things about The Ragamuffin Gospel. I'm a little jealous that you get to go hear him (and I'm curious about "The Pulse" being an actor who plans to move to Chicago one of these days), but I can't be super jealous because Philip Yancey is speaking at Commencement in 2 weeks, and he's my favorite. Have fun with Manning!

I actually thought Ragamuffin Gospel was a little overrated, but that's because I read Henri Nouwen's Return of the Prodigal Son first--Nouwen's book deals with the same subject matter but with more depth. That said, I do like Manning as well.

Adam, thanks for the email--I'm excited about this gathering.

Woot! I've had Nouwen reccomended to me now so many times I think my head is going to burst. I need to read some of his stuff.

I'm excited as well. I'm anxious to meet all these other Christian artists and demand of them WHY AREN'T YOU MY FRIENDS??!!
